Satire Writing Workshop with Elly Lonon
Friday, November 30 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm$50
Satire has long been a tool of writers (and every type of creative, really) seeking to draw attention to a wrong in this world. When faced with the un-faceable, people want a reason to laugh, to diffuse the tension. A successful satirist gives that gift to their reader without giving them permission to look away from the travesty they seek to illuminate.
McSweeney’s columnist and author, Elly Lonon, will guide aspiring satirists through this three-hour, beginning-level workshop which will include:
· Review the basic tenets of satire
· Brainstorm topics with comedic potential
· Draft and critique short pieces in the style of McSweeney’s, Shouts and Murmurs, etc.
· Critique pieces and suggest possible publishing targets
· Discuss submission guidelines and best practices
The class will be highly interactive and you WILL be writing. So, bring your laptop, tablet, notebook, or typewriter.
When her oncologist suggested learning a new language to help recover from chemo brain, Elly Lonon chose to learn HTML which led to the creation of her blog. Her writing has been featured at The New York Times, McSweeney’s, Scary Mommy, Club Mid, SexIs, Your Tango, Sammiches And Psych Meds, and a disappointing number of now defunct sites. She’s also appeared in print within the pages of O Magazine and several parenting humor anthologies.
